Jacob Jensen watches

Time flies, and we have been to Jewellery and Watch Birmingham to catch up with existing suppliers and search out new ideas and quality items for the shop.  We are very excited about a new watch range to complement our popular Danish Design watches, by Jacob Jensen.  Scandinavian style, at great value, that ticks every box on our buying list and hopefully our customers too.  STORM London watches were equally impressive, with lots of brand new designs which you will see in April.

We also saw some great quality new gold designs from London with Mark Milton ready for later in the year and ordered lots of new designer sterling silver – customers just keep buying it, and we need to keep up!!  A particular growing favourite is John Garland-Taylor, all handmade sterling silver, from Warwick, we love to support British makers, and it seems our customers do too.

It’s not just jewellery and watches that we looked at, our after sales at Libby Butler Jewellers is just as important as products, so we looked carefully at replacement watch straps from Condor, and looked at tools and packaging as well and also caught up with industry news.

A great show – we work closely with our suppliers to bring you the best, and it is great to see lots of them under one roof. IMG_0731

Have a STORMin’ Christmas

STORM London watches are a sure fire hit whoever you are treating this Christmas.  With many vibrant colour choices, they are high quality at the right price.

Designs range from elegant to completely bonkers, but all very tempting.  With LED, dual time, rose gold and  faceted glass options, the range is vast for both ladies and gents.   There is an added bonus that while stocks last, every watch purchase has a free gift of a STORM London toiletries set – an extra little something to wrap under the tree with our good wishes.

#GBHighSt awards

Helmsley has been awarded the title of Market Town of the year in the Great British High Street Awards.  As bid leader, I was lucky enough to go to the ceremony in London to receive the good news and am so proud of this achievement.  The whole community supported Helmsley in Business and continues to do so, with all our activities.

So what jewellery is fit for a medieval maiden?  Long pendants were popular, as were brooches, and no medieval lady would be without rings on her fingers.   Nothing new there then? However, medieval jewellery also included hat badges, decorations for belts, weapons, purses and other accessories, and decorated pins, mostly for holding hairstyles and head-dresses in place, not something we sell much of these days.  Although, with such a wide variety of suppliers to draw on, we never say never to special customer requirements, and always try to satisfy even unusual requests!

Sterling silver bangles

Classic solid plain bangles to the wild and wacky, or more unusual finishes, patterns and shapes are all available at Libby Butler Jewellers.  Some are better worn alone as a feature piece, and others fit easily into your arm collection.  Whatever you choose, they are sure to look super stylish, due to the high quality sterling silver craftsmanship and love that goes into making each one.  We have four different suppliers and cater for very budget, style and occasion across the range of 25+ bangles in the shop at any time.

When it comes to sizing, we stock a range of sizes, and can also offer bespoke sizes for larger or small wrists on particular pieces.  Additionally, we have some clever “hidden hinge” designs that look solid, but actually open for ease-of-fit.  It’s best to pop in and try a few on and see what takes your fancy, and which sits most comfortably over your hand or on your wrist.

Alternatively, give us a call and we can advise.  We don’t upload many of these to the website because our offer changes rapidly, but if you spot one you like, just phone or email to enquire, or buy.

Jewellery trends

In some ways, we don’t really follow the latest jewellery trends, it isn’t because we are old fashioned or not “trendy”, I remember at primary school requesting “trendy” jeans instead of the standard ones my Mum was choosing, and make no apologies for the 80s terminology here – in fact Andy often uses 70s words, being much much older than me (7 years but a decade apart!).

I think this is because we don’t buy for the fashion pages, we buy for our customers, and that means searching out both traditional and contemporary style, and above all looking for the highest quality at the right price for you.  We support up and coming designers where possible, because all industries rely on new talent to move forward, but we didn’t follow the trend to give half our shop over to branded jewellery like Pandora that can be now found on most high streets, because our customers want to buy something individual and different from us.

That said, we spent time at the Jewellery and Watch show in Birmingham over the weekend, meeting suppliers both old and new, and looking at the latest collections and “trend tables”, you will see the results of our buying trip in the shop well before Easter.  Some sneak peeks here.  I particularly like the large 9ct gold rings we spotted, real statement pieces, and some great new designs from Hagit Gorali in sterling silver and freshwater pearls, one of which I have in mind for a customer who is getting married later this year.

So if you don’t see what you are looking for here online or in the Helmsley shop, just let us know – we can often source both special & standard items quickly even if we don’t stock them, and we are very happy to find you jewellery that is in your personal style and that will outlast any trend.

Rose gold trend

Rose gold and diamond pendant

Are you an English Rose?  Every year we say that rose gold is coming back, and the new season jewellery ranges always have a sizeable splash of copper colour in them, and then by Christmas it disappears back to a few items as token rose gold in many collections, but the trend in the last 6 months is definitely towards rose.  This has been led by the watch market where rose is firmly established as the colour of choice for both gents and ladies (and let’s face it, we sell as many “gents” watches to ladies these days with the other big trend to oversize cases).  So, if you have pale “English rose” skin like me, embrace the choice available right now! From delicate pendants from London designer Mark Milton with diamonds for sparkle, or a stylish watch from Danish Designs or Storm to tempt you, we have lots of inspiration for you.

Rose gold is sometimes referred to as “Russian” gold as it was very popular at the beginning of the 19th Century in Russia, and our most popular style of “Russian” wedding ring (3 interlocking rings representing the holy trinity) is with 3 colours of gold together, including rose gold.   In Northern mythology, the bands are also said to represent faith, love and friendship.

After your visit to browse our shop, and possibly some further retail therapy for new outfits to show off your jewellery purchases, like gorgeous English tailoring from Carters Countrywear or European Designer Chic from Pennitas, you may feel ready for refreshment in the rose/pink theme too – so why not treat yourself further with some pink fizz from Helmsley wines to take home if you’re driving, or if you’re staying, then a glass of something pink & sparkling at The Black Swan might refresh you from all those hard purchasing decisions?!

Hearts, weddings & ladies in business!

Women in Business – Saving the British High Street BBC News at Six Film < Watch here!

To blog or not to blog, that is the question.  It isn’t that we haven’t got lots of news here, it’s finding time to tell you all about it that is the problem! Love has certainly been in the air this month, we are making lots of wedding rings for couples who are taking the plunge in 2014.  Wedding jewellery is usually one of the last things to organise in your wedding plan, and our bespoke ordering service for rings is perfect for last minute decision makers. We can make plain bands in 2-3 weeks and stone-set in 3-4 weeks.  We have even rescued one very unhappy bride with a special stone-set ring made overnight ready for her wedding after another supplier let her down!

Valentine’s jewellery doesn’t need to be about hearts, but jewellery with heart motifs like this gorgeous silver bracelet are always popular with our customers, whether that’s ladies buying for themselves or chaps buying for their special someone.  Love-hearts never go out of fashion!  Helmsley in Business are working on a special event for Yorkshire Day this year and a wedding dress festival on the 2nd and 3rd of August – weddings from all eras will be showcased with vintage dresses, cakes, and personal mementoes of weddings through the ages in All Saints Church. It will be a great weekend to visit and enjoy many activities on offer here, so “save the date”!

I was very excited to help Federation of Small Businesses launch their latest piece of small business market research via an exclusive on BBC News at Six with home editor Mark Easton.  With more than 50 female colleagues from Helmsley in Business, we made a film about the future of Britain’s High Streets and the fact that women are dominating small High Street Businesses.  A trend which is definitely reflected in Helmsley where more than 60% of businesses are female owned, or partnered, like ours.
